Reel length and posting guide
Pick the platform, your goal and your niche. Get a recommended length range, the formats that fit it and a posting pace. This is guidance from how short videos are built, not a statistic or a promise.
How to use it
- Pick the platform and what the reel should do.
- Add your niche (optional).
- Make the reel inside the range; cut anything that does not serve the hook or the point.
Questions
What are the maximum lengths?
Instagram Reels: up to 3 minutes (Adam Mosseri announced 3-minute Reels in January 2025 (reported by Business Today): https://www.businesstoday.in/technology/news/story/instagram-head-announces-big-changes-3-minute-reels-and-new-look-for-profile-grid-461527-2025-01-21). TikTok: up to 10 minutes when uploaded (TikTok expanded uploads to 10 minutes in 2022 (reported by TechCrunch): https://techcrunch.com/?p=2277359). YouTube Shorts: up to 3 minutes (vertical or square) (YouTube Help: Shorts can be up to 3 minutes: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/15424877).
Is shorter always better?
No. Shorter is easier to finish, but a tutorial or a story needs room. Match the length to the job: a hook reel can be 7-15 seconds, a story 30-90.
How often should I post?
There is no single right answer. Pick a pace you can keep for months and stay consistent; add more once a format works.
Is this based on data?
It is guidance, not a statistic: ranges that fit each goal, plus what the platforms publish about their limits.
